Combat Zone was the first MMA promotion to set up shop in New Hampshire, and now under the direction of promoter, Calvin Kattar, and matchmaker, Ryan Fennelly, they’ll once again bring cutting edge combat sports entertainment to the Granite State. Starting at Combat Zone 53, the promotion will be branching out into the world of K-1 rules kickboxing, all contained within the steel mesh of the Combat Zone cage.
It was a move that required commission approval and a bit of fine-tuning as far as protective equipment and rules are concerned, yet the pieces are rapidly falling into place for this ultra-exciting sport to enter New Hampshire for the first time.
“It’s a great step that will help the cards along and give guys more opportunities.” Ryan Fennelly explains. “Some fighters need that half-step; wanting to get the jitters out before an amateur MMA fight or wanting to keep busy before going pro. This opens up opportunity for those fighters as well as weight classes to make some exciting matches.”
The move should allow for expanded shows, and while new faces from the pure striking arts are expected to try their hand under the new rule sets, don’t be surprised when a few MMA regulars in the Combat Zone cage lace up the big gloves for a change of pace.
It’s a bold move for the company, but one that has massive potential given the rise of Glory and Lion Fights on cable television, and bringing an attractive alternative to the specialized ground game that can sometimes turn off casual fans. Combat Zone 53 will take place Friday, April 24th at Rockingham Park in Salem, New Hampshire.
